Shockwave Therapy for Tendinitis in Mesa, Arizona

Chronic Tendinitis That Won't Quit

Tendinitis can take over your life. It starts as a small ache after a workout or a long day at work, and within a few months you are dealing with constant pain, weakness, and a limited ability to do the activities you love. Whether it is tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, Achilles tendinitis, patellar tendinitis, or shoulder tendinopathy, the story is usually the same: rest helps for a few days, then the pain comes right back as soon as you try to use the area.

At Cornerstone Wellness Center in Mesa, Arizona, our team uses shockwave therapy to address chronic tendinitis at its source. Shockwave is a non-surgical, drug-free treatment that stimulates real healing in tendons that have stopped responding to conservative care.

Why Tendons Are So Slow to Heal

Tendons connect muscle to bone, and they have a notoriously poor blood supply compared to muscle tissue. That is why a pulled muscle can feel better in a week, while a strained tendon can take months. Once a tendon has been irritated and overloaded long enough, the tissue itself starts to break down. This is called tendinopathy, and it is what most people are actually dealing with when their tendinitis has lasted more than a few weeks.

Rest alone often is not enough to heal tendinopathy. The tendon needs a stimulus to remodel and rebuild. Shockwave therapy provides that stimulus by delivering targeted acoustic energy into the tissue, which triggers the body's own healing cascade.

Conditions We Treat With Shockwave

Our team uses shockwave therapy for a wide range of tendon problems, including tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, rotator cuff tendinopathy, biceps tendinitis, patellar tendinitis (jumper's knee), Achilles tendinitis, gluteal tendinopathy, hamstring tendinopathy, and plantar fasciitis. We see patients who have tried rest, anti-inflammatories, cortisone injections, and physical therapy without lasting results.

If you have been told that surgery is the next step, it is worth considering shockwave first. For many of our patients, shockwave is what finally allowed them to get back to lifting, running, working, and playing the sports they love.

How Shockwave Therapy Works

We use the Storz D-ACTOR 100, a clinical-grade radial shockwave device. During treatment, a handheld applicator delivers targeted acoustic waves into the affected tendon. These waves increase blood flow to the area, stimulate new collagen formation, break down disorganized scar tissue, and reduce pain signaling. The treatment is performed in office, takes 10 to 15 minutes per session, and requires no anesthesia or downtime.

Most patients need 4 to 6 sessions, spaced about a week apart. The body continues to remodel the tendon for several weeks after treatment ends, which means results often keep improving long after your final session.

What to Expect During Treatment

Your first visit includes a thorough exam so that we can confirm the diagnosis and identify the exact location of the damaged tissue. Once that is mapped out, we begin treatment. You will lie or sit in a comfortable position, our team will apply gel to the area, and we will move the shockwave applicator across the tissue in a controlled pattern.

You will feel a tapping or thumping sensation. There is some discomfort, especially over the most tender areas, but the treatment is brief and well-tolerated. Some soreness afterward is normal and usually lasts only a day or two. We encourage you to stay active but to avoid loading the area heavily for about 48 hours after each session.

Pairing Shockwave With Rehab

Shockwave is most effective when paired with the right loading program. As the tendon starts to heal, we add progressive exercises that gradually load the tissue and help it rebuild into healthy, organized fibers. This is why our patients often see longer-lasting results than they would from passive treatment alone.

We will give you a clear home program to follow between visits and adjust it as you progress through the treatment plan. The combination of in-office shockwave and at-home loading is what helps tendons stay healthy long after your final session.

Is Shockwave Right for You?

Shockwave therapy is best suited for chronic tendinopathy that has not responded to conservative care. It is worth considering before moving to injections or surgery. There are a few situations where shockwave is not appropriate, such as during pregnancy or while taking certain medications, which is why we do a careful exam before starting any treatment plan.

Frequently Ask Question

  • Tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, Achilles tendinitis, patellar tendinitis, rotator cuff tendinopathy, biceps tendinitis, gluteal tendinopathy, and hamstring tendinopathy, among others. If you are not sure whether shockwave is right for your specific case, call us and we will let you know.

  • Most patients notice improvement after the second or third session. Full results often continue to develop for several weeks after the final session as the tendon completes the remodeling process.

  • There is some discomfort during treatment, particularly over the most tender areas, but it is brief and well-tolerated by most patients. Soreness afterward is mild and short-lived.

  • No, but we will likely modify your routine. We typically ask you to avoid heavy loading of the treated tendon for 48 hours after each session, then gradually progress your activity as the tendon responds.

  • Cortisone reduces inflammation temporarily but can weaken tendons over time. Shockwave stimulates real tissue healing, which is why results often last longer. Many of our patients come to us specifically to avoid repeated injections.

  • For many patients, yes. Shockwave is worth considering before moving to surgery, especially for conditions like chronic tennis elbow, Achilles tendinopathy, and patellar tendinitis. The exam at your first visit will help us determine whether it is a good fit for your case.
